As part of Easton Utilities’ ongoing commitment to ensure cybersecurity preparedness, we consistently work to identify potential vulnerabilities within operational systems in a controlled environment so they can be addressed before a real-world cyber incident occurs. The development of a recent program, Innovative Readiness Training (IRT), has provided a great opportunity to partner with the Maryland National Guard to provide real-world training for military personnel while delivering valuable services to participating communities.
“Cybersecurity is an essential part of protecting the critical services our customers and community depend on every day,” said Fred Christie, Chief Information Officer for Easton Utilities. “This partnership provides a unique opportunity to have another team of highly skilled professionals evaluate our systems, test our preparedness and help us identify opportunities to become even more resilient. Just as importantly, working together will allow us to build relationships and strengthen coordination before an incident occurs, which is invaluable when responding to a real-world event.”
The proposed work will focus specifically on Easton Utilities’ operational technology (OT) environment. Customer information will not be part of the testing. The beneficial engagement is at no cost to Easton Utilities, but requires an application which included public notification using the exact language provided by the Maryland National Guard. The notice was posted on Easton Utilities’ Facebook page and published in the local newspaper as part of that required process.
The IRT program brings together high-level capabilities and community resources to provide hands-on training opportunities while addressing important community needs. The Maryland National Guard plans to work collaboratively with Easton Utilities to gain an understanding of the organization’s network infrastructure and operations, assess potential vulnerabilities, review cybersecurity governance documents, perform penetration testing and threat hunting, and facilitate tabletop exercises with management.
Easton Utilities continually evaluates its systems, processes and procedures to protect critical infrastructure and the information entrusted to the organization. “We are very transparent about this and have issued ongoing communications regarding this topic,” added Christie. The proposed IRT partnership represents another proactive step in preparing employees, systems and leadership to respond effectively to evolving cybersecurity threats.
