Easton Utilities Provides Update on Environmental Response and Operational Improvements Following February Fuel Spill

Easton Utilities provided an update to the Mayor and Easton Town Council on the extensive corrective actions and operational improvements completed following the diesel fuel spill that occurred on February 8, 2026. Since the incident, the organization has focused on strengthening environmental safeguards, improving operational procedures, and reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability.

John Hines, Chief Operating Officer and Kurt Fuchs, Manager of External Affairs, presented an overview of the extensive efforts made by Easton Utilities since the incident. They shared that Easton Utilities has been working closely with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and other regulatory agencies, and that the company has completed all planned mechanical and operational improvements related to the incident.

Among the completed enhancements are:

  • Relocation of fuel tank vents away from the adjacent stream.
  • Installation of overflow catch tanks to provide additional environmental protection.
  • New electrical controls, fail-safe systems, and alarms that provide multiple layers of monitoring and automatic safeguards.
  • Independent third-party pressure testing of all underground fuel lines in accordance with MDE best practice guidelines.
  • Multiple inspections conducted by the Maryland Department of the Environment throughout the remediation and improvement process.
  • Modifications to fuel receiving procedures that now exceed industry best practices.
  • Ongoing groundwater monitoring at three dedicated test locations to ensure continued environmental protection.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, Easton Utilities has strengthened its operational oversight and organizational structure. The company has completed a staff reorganization and has retained an independent third-party Stationary Engineer firm to oversee plant operations and provide operational guidance over the next two years.

“From the beginning, our commitment has been to learn from this incident and take every possible step to prevent something like this from happening again,” said Hines. “We have made significant investments in our equipment, our processes, and our people. These improvements go beyond regulatory requirements and reflect our commitment to continuous improvement and environmental stewardship.”

The company remains committed to ongoing environmental monitoring and maintaining open communication with regulators, elected officials, customers, and the community.

“Our community expects and deserves the highest standards from Easton Utilities,” Fuchs stated. “While we deeply regret this incident, the actions we have taken demonstrate our commitment to accountability, transparency, and protecting the natural resources that are so important to all of us.”

Easton Utilities will continue monitoring groundwater and working with regulatory agencies to ensure the long-term protection of the surrounding environment.
